Review by Priscilla Yee

The album War Requiem Spring Symphony The Young Persons Guide To The Orchestra by Benjamin Britten, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Karel Ančerl is a stunning collection of works that showcase the brilliance of the composer and the orchestra's musicianship. The album starts with the haunting War Requiem, which is a powerful and emotional piece that captures the horrors of war and the need for peace. The choir and soloists deliver a moving performance that is both poignant and beautiful.

The Spring Symphony, on the other hand, is a joyful and energetic work that celebrates the arrival of spring. The orchestra's lively and playful rendition perfectly captures the spirit of the season, and the choir's soaring vocals add to the joyous atmosphere. The final piece, The Young Persons Guide To The Orchestra, is a delightful introduction to the different sections of the orchestra, and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra's virtuosic performance highlights the unique qualities of each instrument.

About Benjamin Britten, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Karel Ančerl

British composer, conductor, and pianist. Born: November 22, 1913, in Lowestoft, UK - died: December 04, 1976, in Aldeburgh, UK. He showed talent from an early age, and first came to public attention with the a cappella choral work A Boy Was Born in 1934. With the premiere of his opera Peter Grimes in 1945, he leapt to international fame. For the next fifteen years he devoted much of his compositional attention to writing operas, establishing him as one of the leading 20th century figures in this genre. Britten's interests as a composer were wide-ranging; he produced important music in such varied genres as orchestral, choral, solo vocal (much of it written for the tenor Peter Pears), chamber and instrumental, as well as film music. He also took a great interest in writing music for children and amateur performers, and was a fine pianist and conductor. One of Britten's most important works, The War Requiem was completed 20 December 1961, and first performed 30 May 1962. Britten received many prizes and honors, including becoming a Companion of Honour in 1952, and a member of the Order of Merit in 1965.
